Each gate reaches a different park region first and leaves a different amount of daylight after the drive from the airport or gateway town.
The year-round road from Gardiner enters at Mammoth Hot Springs. It is the direct gate for Mammoth lodging, Paradise Valley arrivals, and northern-range plans toward Tower and Lamar Valley.
The west gate reaches Madison Junction, where roads divide toward Norris or Old Faithful. It is the common approach for west-side geyser days and has substantial lodging, fuel, dining, and groceries outside the park.
The south road enters from Grand Teton and reaches Grant Village and West Thumb before Old Faithful or Canyon. It fits a two-park trip, but Jackson is not a practical base for repeated Yellowstone day trips.
The east road crosses Sylvan Pass before reaching Yellowstone Lake. Cody and Lake-area lodging fit this approach; seasonal opening dates, mountain weather, and road work require a current check.
Cooke City and Silver Gate open directly toward Lamar Valley. The Beartooth Highway approach from Red Lodge is spectacular and highly seasonal, so never assume it is available outside summer.
Strong for north entrance, Mammoth, Paradise Valley, and wildlife-leaning trips.
The west entrance leads toward Madison Junction, Norris, and the Old Faithful road. West Yellowstone has fuel, food, lodging, and seasonal air service.
Best for a longer two-park road trip; do not treat it as a casual Yellowstone commute.
The east entrance reaches Yellowstone Lake through Sylvan Pass. It suits Cody pairings and east-side lodging, subject to seasonal road status.
The seasonal Beartooth Highway reaches Cooke City and the northeast gate for Lamar Valley plans. Verify the highway and park roads before departure.

Bozeman connects north to Gardiner through Paradise Valley or south to West Yellowstone through the Gallatin corridor. Gardiner favors Mammoth and Lamar; West Yellowstone favors Madison, Norris, Midway, and Old Faithful.
Jackson leads through Grand Teton and Yellowstone’s south entrance. The route still continues past Grant and West Thumb before reaching Old Faithful or Canyon, so allow for park traffic and scenic stops rather than treating it as an airport transfer.
Cody serves the east entrance and Yellowstone Lake side. Idaho Falls usually points toward West Yellowstone, while Billings can lead to Gardiner or a much more seasonal Beartooth route through Red Lodge and Cooke City.
A late flight, mountain weather, wildlife traffic, and seasonal road closures can turn a nominally short route into an after-dark park drive. Reserve the first room near the gate or park region reached from the airport.
Use a gateway room rather than crossing Yellowstone after dark. West Yellowstone, Gardiner, Cody, Jackson, and Cooke City each provide a safer stopping point for the entrance they serve.
An early landing can support an in-park first night, but leave time for the rental counter, groceries, entrance traffic, wildlife delays, and slower park roads.
